Christopher Bowen was working as a service tech for another business when he decided to start his own pool service company. He had one account and, when he opened Bowen Pools in March 2017, asked the homeowner if he could continue to service her pool for free in exchange for using her pool chemicals to get his company started.
Working out of his wife’s CRV — they couldn’t afford a truck yet — and with bartered chemicals in hand, Bowen borrowed $500 from his parents for equipment and ventured out on his own.
Just under three years later, he had 150 service accounts, and by the end of this year the company will have completed about 60 pool remodels, with two new construction projects under contract. This year the company was voted Living magazine’s best pool company, won Best of Denton County for pool remodeling, and was in the top three of Best of Denton County for pool maintenance and pool builders.
Bowen wants to see more industry regulation in the future and hopes that expectations for pool building and service will soon be on par with other trades. “There are a lot of people who have no business doing pool construction/service, so I wish it was a little more strict,” Bowen says. “Other trades required licensing, continuing education and most of the time require actual on-the-job training before you can be fully licensed.”
Bowen is trying to bring that standard to his own company. He’s a Genesis Associate, which means he has successfully passed the Basic Pool Construction and Fluid Engineering courses offered by Genesis and is on track to become a member of the Society of Watershape Designers. He’s bringing his construction team to the PSP Expo for training and plans to attend additional trade shows this season with members of his team.
