Joey Busic was working in the golf department at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa when he received a call from a supervisor, offering him a transfer to the pool team’s engineering department.
Despite difficult overnight hours, Busic immersed himself in the pool industry and became a repair tech. He loved the job but found himself yearning for more than the day-to-day routine and workplace politics. That’s when a chance encounter with a Precision Aquatics pool service truck sparked a change.
At lunch with his wife, Busic saw the truck with its distinctive yellow cases and wondered about a career shift. Not one to miss an opportunity, his wife called the number on the side of the truck to ask if they were hiring, and within a month, Busic joined the Precision Aquatics team. With a work truck, gas card, cellphone, regular work hours and better pay, the move proved to be the right choice.
Busic started with a commercial route in his hometown of Oceanside, California, but now covers downtown San Diego. Once he finishes that for the day, he works on repairs from San Diego to North County; performs pool equipment and technical startups for new pools; and manages the social media accounts for Precision Aquatics.
Known as The Pool Assassin, Busic plans to keep living up to his name. “I want to be the most proficient at every aspect of repair and service,” he says. “I will continually take every webinar, listen to every podcast and attend all training classes until I am an expert.”
He also wants to encourage younger pool pros to be “pool assassins,” which he defines as those who “take pride in their work, are organized, get up early, manage their time efficiently and seek further education.”
Busic attributes much of his success and growth to his mentor, Dustin Anderson, the owner and CEO of Precision Aquatics. “He will always have your back no matter what the situation is,” Busic says. “He has given me everything I need so I can do my job. He has given me life lessons, and I have grown to be a better man and father because of him. He continually pushes me to do better and changes it up so I don’t get burnt out.”
