Alex Tyler’s coast-to-coast employment history is a testament to his love for design. After graduating college with a bachelor’s degree in zoology, Tyler worked at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, which led him to pursue a master’s in landscape architecture. He then moved to Alaska to work on high-end residential design and build projects, followed by five years at a prestigious zoo and aquarium design firm in Seattle. Thereafter, Tyler was principal designer at a high-end residential pool firm in Dallas.
“The years of experience in the zoo and aquarium industry, coupled with my experience at the firm in Dallas, prompted me to take my own leap,” Tyler says of opening Alchemy Exteriors in 2017. “In this venture, I have been able to combine all of my past experiences and skills into one design set, under one roof.”
In 2019, Tyler received second place in the PHTA’s Million Dollar Pool Challenge for his design. In 2020, he won first place, with nearly 60% of the votes. “This allowed me to solidify my place in the pool industry as not only a landscape architect who can design pools, but also as an award-winning pool designer,” he says.
Tyler seeks to continue exceeding design limitations for pools and exterior environments. “[I want to] push the boundaries of both design and construction,” he says, “by combining multiple fields and an array of science into my designs.”
