Shining Star
AquaStar Pool Products’ new, patented PureStar ozone generator represents a breakthrough for the pool industry.Â
The plug-and-play system installs in-line and requires less than 18 inches of horizontal pipe. It also features a venturi injector with auto-flow control, allowing it to work with variable-speed pumps, even at lower speeds.
Todd Pieri, chief operating officer at AquaStar, explains for the past 10 years, the company has offered an ozone system for new builds, but what pool service professionals wanted was one they could retrofit to existing pools.
“The challenge with the industry was the legacy ozone systems didn’t work well with variable-speed pumps,” Pieri says. “The hydraulics were bad, and it was counterproductive to what variable-speed pumps were trying to accomplish.”
So, six years ago, the AquaStar team brought in what they felt was a top-end ozone system and picked it apart.
After years of work, AquaStar created a basketball-sized product that, based on hydraulics alone, is more efficient than any other in the industry. What the team really desired, though, was accessibility — with a low price and quick installation, they feel they’ve achieved it.
The PureStar ozone system has a self-regulating flow, so there’s no plumbing or bypass required around the unit, making installation seamless. This also results in optimized hydraulic efficiency, which not only reduces wear and tear on other pool components but also extends the lifespan of the system. For pool owners, this means a smaller environmental footprint and lower energy bills.
PureStar features a self-cleaning component as well that tackles calcium buildup, which sets it apart from other systems that need physical cleaning, and it only requires 20 gallons of flow from the variable-speed pump to get ozone into the pool.
In addition, PureStar features LED light indicators that not only tell pool owners the system is working and dispensing ozone effectively but also provide pool professionals with real-time status updates.
“You don’t have to be scared of ozone anymore because we’ve gotten rid of all those bogeymen,” Pieri says.
Steve Barnes, director of science and compliance at AquaStar, adds that many people have heard about ozone but don’t entirely understand its benefits. That’s in part because until now, it’s been out of reach.
One advantage to ozone is it’s nearly 120 times faster at chasing down bacteria than chlorine, Barnes says. So, when there’s ozone in the pool, chlorine has less work to do.
I think this will be the biggest product that AquaStar ever makes.”

“I think this will be the biggest product that AquaStar ever makes,” Pieri says. “It’s truly revolutionary in its space.”
Others think so too because the PureStar ozone system was recognized as the 2023 Pool Nation Awards Innovative Product of the Year — an award nominated and voted on by pool professionals.
