At Pentair Pool, we’re dedicated to creating safe poolside experiences for pool pros and pool owners alike. To help promote additional safety awareness, we sat down with Kenneth Gregory, Compliance and Safety Manager at Pentair Pool, to answer some of your questions.

Q: What’s the most important thing to keep in mind about safety in the pool industry?

Gregory: Safety is no accident! Most, if not all, accidents can be prevented by staying alert. When I speak to groups about safety, I’ll often hold up my phone and ask, “What is this?” It’s a distraction!

When working at or sitting by the pool as children play, put your phone away and pay attention. Stop any unsafe play and watch them closely! When someone is doing a repair, put that phone away and pay attention to your work. Staying alert is essential when it comes to poolside safety.

Q: Beyond the obvious dangers, what are some non-visible or less recognized hazards that pool industry professionals should be aware of?

Gregory: Have you ever been in an indoor pool? Did you notice the smell of chlorine? That smell is a harmful gas that can pose a danger to your health. Competitive swimmers have a higher risk of asthma or other breathing illnesses from spending hours in indoor pools breathing this gas.

Did you know that Pentair has a product that can reduce these harmful gases in an indoor pool? It’s the BioShield® UV System! Class dismissed!

Safety is something we take seriously at Pentair Pool. As a bonus tip, remember to keep a first aid kit in your work truck and have emergency contacts on speed dial in your phone. Ken Gregory said it best: safety is no accident!
