BIO-UV Group Obtains NSF 50 Cryptosporidium Certification
BIO-UV Group and its Scottish subsidiary Triogen — experts in UV, ozone and AOP water treatment for more than 35 years — have obtained NSF 50 Cryptosporidium certification for their Triogen UV CF range.
Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes a diarrheal disease called cryptosporidiosis, the main symptoms of which are abdominal cramps and diarrhea. This parasite is transmitted by ingesting water or food contaminated with the feces of an infected animal or person.
An infected person bathing in a pool releases millions of parasites, exposing people who have accidentally swallowed pool water. There was an average cryptosporidiosis resurgence of 13% per year between 2009-17 in the U.S., totaling 7,465 cases over the span, according to a 2019 CDC report. Swimming pools, paddling pools and water parks accounted for 35% of recorded epidemics.
The additional NSF 50 Cryptosporidium certification guarantees water disinfection and cryptosporidium inactivation by ultraviolet treatment for pool water where chlorine is not effective. Unlike other bathing water pathogens, Cryptosporidium is highly resistant to chlorine disinfection.
The use of UV technology in Triogen CF units not only disinfects the water to inactivate the Cryptosporidium parasite and harmful pathogens but also dechlorinates the water by reducing the combined chlorine content, thanks to its medium-pressure lamps.
NSF is recognized as the leading testing and certification organization in the recreational water sector and can guarantee a product complies with regulatory requirements in North America. NSF/ANSI 50 certification applies to swimming pool equipment, spas and other recreational water installations to ensure compliance with standards set by public health authorities.
This new certification means BIO-UV Group can address not only the Asian and Middle Eastern markets but also the North American commercial pool market.
